Are there any planets with biomes other than a desert, ocean, and forest?
I know that there are planets where they are covered in deserts and oceans, but what if the planet is covered in ice, or it has an extremely hot or cold climate?
A:
The first planet that comes to mind is Mercury. It has an extremely thin atmosphere, and we can see its surface in some great detail.
(No, the surface of Mercury is not covered in ice, it's very hot. The Earth is at the same distance from the sun as Mercury, but its atmosphere isn't that thin. Mercury is about 1/7th as far from the sun as the Earth.)
An ice planet could be far less interesting than a desert planet. Consider:
Mars has a thin atmosphere and a very thin, icy surface. It has been covered in ice for a long time, and it has lakes and rivers, including one that spans the planet's entirety.
Many Mars-like planets could have ice-covered worlds, but it's difficult to make planets very far from the sun without liquid water. The thick atmosphere of Venus would mean that no water is in liquid form.
A desert planet could be a lot more interesting:
Venus, which has a thin atmosphere but no surface water. Its surface is hot and dry.
Some Mars-like planets could have desert planets, but it's difficult to make planets very far from the sun without liquid water.
Jupiter, which has a huge atmosphere that has long ago lost its clouds. Its surface is covered in icy hydrogen and liquid water, so it's a very interesting place to live, even if it's not very hospitable to us. It's also a very large planet, so it's not particularly friendly to life that's size-limited.
I don't know of any other planets that would have bi ac619d1d87
